I began Decoraciones Alvizar two years ago when I decided to formalize the work I was doing from home. I came to the United States five years ago. I spent the first three years getting settled in San Jose and providing for my two sons in this new country. After three years though, my creative side was anxious to find an outlet. I started with gifts to friends around Christmas time of handmade angels and knick-knacks. These friends began to make requests and then I started to get referrals and it all picked up steam from then on.
In Veracruz, my hometown, I was a high school teacher and was the proprietor of my own ceramics store and workshop. I taught adults how to make and paint ceramics in the evenings and sold my own creations as well.
I have always been interested in exercising my creative side, by painting, sewing, and decorating, as well as teaching others to enjoy the process of making artworks. In fact, I remember when I was a little girl I made pinatas from scratch for my younger brother's birthday. I insisted that he needed to have them to make the party complete and spent the afternoon teaching my siblings how to help with the construction.
My dream is to have my own retail store and workshop here in San Jose. Right now I am working my way towards this dream and Start-Up is helping me along the way. When I first went to Start-Up I was looking to professionalize my services. Now, I hope to continue attending the Start-Up classes to help me plan for my next big step - a retail storefront.
